Dear Member or Friend of
Christians Supporting Community Organizing,
We look forward to seeing you again at the Annual Meeting of Christians
Supporting Community Organizing. Our meeting this year is November 1-2,
2009. We will be meeting at the Benedictine Inn and Retreat and Conference
Center, 1402 Southern Ave., Beech Grove, IN (on the southeast edge of
Indianapolis). We will begin at 4:00 on Sunday, November 1, and conclude
with dinner at 6:00 on Monday, November 2.
The speaker this year for our public lecture on Sunday, 7:00 p. m., is Michael
Bowling, pastor of Englewood Christian Church (Christian Churches/Church of
Christ) in Indianapolis. His address will center on the challenge of
congregations setting the standard in community organizing. He will be
placing this in context theologically, historically, and contemporarily (e.g.
communitarianism, political activism, and civic engagement). Michael has
spoken on this topic locally, nationally, and in far off places like Haiti,
Mexico, and Ireland. Several area pastors as well as some professors at
Anderson University (Church of God) have indicated that they will attend the
lecture.
On Monday morning, we will continue discussion of the lecture. On Monday
we will also discuss how we individually and corporately can expand our
“missionaries” to Evangelical, Holiness, and Pentecostal (EPH) churches and
organizations and how we can equip our members to carry out CSCO’s mission.
We are meeting in Indianapolis so that some of us can provide a CSCO presence at
the Convention of the North American Association of Christians in Social Work.
We will have there two workshops and an exhibit table. See www.nacsw.org/conv_head_text.html
if you are interested in the Convention. We will also identify at our
meeting other appropriate EPH organizations to which to have a presence and
welcome your suggestions of such groups. We also welcome suggestions for
our website (www.cscoweb.org).
Our Annual Meeting is a refreshing time of fellowship and encouraging one
another, worship, Bible study, evaluation, strategizing, and discussing new
aspects of community organizing and the recruitment for it of EPH leaders and
churches.
Enclosed is a CSCO registration form which should be in Dick Righter’s hands
by October 15. As noted on it, scholarship help is available. Also
enclosed is a summary of some of our milestones for this past year.
Directions to the Benedictine Retreat Center will come to registrants.
Now also is also time for membership and contributions. You may use the
registration form for this purpose even if you are unable to attend. Your
contribution will help us expand our work. Please set apart a few days
this November to support each other in our important and unique mission.
Sincerely yours,
Your 2008-2009 Leadership
Team: Stephen Mott, Dick Righter, Wally Tilleman
